- he Beacon Institute for Rivers and Estuaries, a scientific research organization, and I.B.M., the computer giant, plan to come together in this old waterfront town to announce a bold collaboration combining innovative technology with marine biology expertise to create a world-class center for river research. Their joint project will create a system of sensors to provide 24-hour-a-day monitoring of conditions in the 315-mile Hudson River as it flows from the Adirondack Mountains to the Atlantic Ocean.

Prof. Leila Parsa has been selected to receive the 2007 IAS Outstanding
Young Member Award. The purpose of this award is to recognize
outstanding achievement and contribution to the profession through
involvement in IEEE-IAS activities by an IAS member less than 35 years
of age. In selecting the recipient, the Committee shall consider
contributions of the nominee to IAS through authorship of technical
papers, IAS chapter leadership, IAS committee work, conference
leadership and standards working groups. This Award includes the plaque,
$1,000 honorarium and travel expenses to attend the IAS Annual Meeting.
The award will be formally presented at the President's Banquet at the
IAS Annual Meeting,held in New Orleans, September 22- 27.
- Two RPI student startups have won the Innovation Showcase competition sponsored by the ASME. Ecovative Design and JDAxis were also the top two finishers in the Tech Valley Student Business Plan Competition co-sponsored by CATS.
- CATS faculty Michael Jensen, Yoav Peles, and John Wen have received a 5-year, $3.4 million award from the Department of Defense to advance the thermal management of large, distributed electronic systems aboard naval vessels. A nice article from the Albany Times Union is here

Thorlabs has won the 2007 PhAST/Laser Focus World Innovation Award, presented at the Photonic Applications Systems Technologies (PhAST) Conference in Baltimore on May 7, for commercializing the ASOM technology developed at CATS. Congratulations!

Several CATS-Affiliated faculty were honored at this year's School of Engineering Awards. Birsen Yazici and John Wen were recognized for their research, Eric Ledet and Ananth Krishnamurthy were honored for teaching, and Linda Schadler was honored as part of the outstanding team that created "Molecularium." Congratulations to all.
- Adaptive Scanning Optical Microscope (ASOM) technology, developed by CATS researchers Ben Potsaid, Yves Bellouard and John Wen, has been licensed to Thorlabs, Inc., and featured at Photonics West in January, 2007. Industry observers say that it is the first commercially offered instrument that includes new MEMS adaptive optics.
- CATS affiliated Professor and mechatronics guru Kevin Craig is featured in a new videocast series produced by Design News in conjunction with his new monthly column in that publication.
- CATS affiliated Professor Linda Schadler was named a fellow of ASM International on October 17, 2006.
- A paper on "Automation of Challenging Spatial-Temporal Biomedical Observations with the Adaptive Scanning Optical Microscope (ASOM)" by Rensselaer Biology Professor Fern Finger, CATS Research Scientist Ben Potsaid and CATS Director John T. Wen was named Best Conference Paper at the 2006 IEEE Conference on Automation Science and Engineering in Shanghai.
- CATS affiliated faculty Ananth Krishnamurthy conducted a second very sucessful workshop on leaning manufacturing strategy "Capacity Planning and Production Control with POLCA" on September 19-20, 2006.
- On September 13, 2006 CATS held a Technology Commercialization and Venturing Workshop for university-based researchers considering a new technology venture. The event was co-sponsored by the Center for Future Energy Systems, Office of Technology Commercialization, and the Lally School of Management and Technology. The Workshop drew 45 people who heard presentations on topics such as intellectual property protection, startup financing, and SBIR/STTR programs, and heard from entrepreneurs who have started a variety of businesses from the fruits of academic research. - Rensselaer hosted the 10th IEEE COMPEL Workshop (COMPEL'06) July 16-19, 2006, bringing together industrial, government, and academic researchers for interactive discussion on the latest advances in modeling, analysis, and control of power electronic devices, circuits, and systems.

- A CATS invention, the Adaptive Scanning Optical Microscope (ASOM) (inventors: Ben Potsaid, Yves Bellouard, and John Wen), is garnering coverage in optics and microscopy magazines:
ASOM is also mentioned in the Boston Micromachines' press release on Mini-DM deformable mirrors.
- CATS affiliated faculty Ananth Krishnamurthy conducted a very sucessful workshop on leaning manufacturing strategy "Capacity Planning and Production Control with POLCA" on 3/14-3/15.

- CATS conducted a successful Automation Open House in the Heffner Alumni House on May 1, 2006. Photos and posters are now on-line.
- CATS-alum Ryan O'Donnell and the whole team at BullEx Digital Safety have been named "Rising Star" of the Capital District business community by the Center for Economic Growth.
- CATS affiliated faculty Professor Antoinette Maniatty has been elected a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
- Undergraduates Craig Emerson and David Shangraw won First Place at RPI's Undergraduate Research Forum for their project, "Nano Air Vehicles" under the direction of CATS affiliated faculty, Miki Amitay.
- CATS affiliated faculty Murat Arcak has been awarded the 2006 Donald P. Eckman Award given by the American Automatic Control Council, recognizing an outstanding young engineer in the field of automatic control. He was cited "for outstanding contributions to feedback design of nonlinear systems and networks, and innovative applications to fuel cell technology."
- FMC and CATS officially merged on February 1, 2006. Current Director of FMC, Ray Puffer, will become the Director for Industrial Automation in CATS. Current FMC staff, Steve Rock, will become a research scientist in the CATS.
- The Multidisciplinary Design Laboratory (MDL) in the Rensselaer School of Engineering and the CATS signed a Memorandum of Understanding pledging collaboration for assisting New York State companies participating in MDL.
- CATS affiliated faculty, Professor Arthur C. Sanderson, professor of electrical, computer, and systems engineering, is chair of the science advisory committee for the Rivers and Estuaries Center, which Governor Pataki announced in January 2006, will receive $25 million for the construction of a Center for Advanced Environmental Technology. - FMC and CATS received a robotic equipment award from the Robotic Industrial Association (RIA) for automated fuel cell stack assembly research on September 28, 2005. This research will be led by FMC co-directors and CATS affiliated faculty, Ray Puffer and Steve Derby.
